Health: 10 Mistakes that Most People Make
How a Drug Rehab Center Treats Patients
Drug rehab centers are offering different treatment programs and most of these treatments start with detoxification and from there, they see if there is progress or none. Some can be given prescription medication to assist patients as they are going through other types of treatment which includes behavioral and counseling therapy.
What treatment is currently offered in a drug rehab facility will largely depend on the type of training that the personnel has, the facilities that the center has and of course, the center itself. However, drug addicted patients will be given a separate type of treatment. For the treatment, this one will be based largely on the patient’s capacity and needs and not on the substance that they are addicted to.
In general, the first step in rehabilitation is detoxification which consists of cleansing the body of all toxins brought by the drugs. During detox, it’s expected that there is going to be a stage of withdrawal among patients from what they’re addicted to and this is a very unpleasant experience which in some cases, can be fatal.
Patients are closely monitored when they are going through detoxification and may even be prescribed with medicines to help them get through the roughest part of their rehab. Detoxification may take for around 3 weeks at least but there are cases that it is extended depending on how the patient is reacting to the treatment.
Once the detoxification is done, the drug rehab center would now perform a formal assessment to the patient. The assessment consists of recommendations regarding other treatments that are needed. Treating the physical and psychological illnesses and symptoms of patients are all part of the program. In addition to being weaned off the substance to which the patient was addicted formerly, if they’re using drugs in dealing with the symptoms, there is a possibility that they might suffer from psychological disorder which needs to be treated too. This is very important if they want to minimize the possibilities of going back to substance abuse.
Individual counseling as well as group therapy plays a part in rehabilitating patients too. Fact is, both of these approaches can help in dealing with psychological illnesses. A form of counseling that is typically offered by drug rehab centers is behavioral therapy. The addicts throughout their use of the drugs may possibly have developed a habit of taking the drugs in certain settings or times of day. The aim of behavioral therapy is to break these habits among patients by showing them that they can free themselves from such and that they can function properly without these drugs.
